BOAT SMART
It is unlawful for a boat to operate at greater than headway speed (6 mph or less) within 150 feet of a swimmer, water skier, boat launch, or when the operator's vision is obscured in any way.
Law enforcement at Indian lake is provided by the Massachusetts Environmental Police in cooperation with the Worcester Police Department.
Please don't hesitate to contact the Worcester Police Department if you see illegal activities happening at the parks surrounding the lake and the MA Environmental Police in regards to reckless driving and improper use of boats or personal watercraft on the lake.
On 9/29/2022, the Worcester City Council voted to ban the use of personal watercraft (aka Jetskis/Seadoos) at Indian Lake. The ban remains in effect.
Massachusetts has joined many other states and will require boat or personal watercraft operators to complete a boater education course. The Hanson-Milone Boater Safety Act, was recently signed into law by Governor Maura Healey. This law, set to take effect on April 1, 2026, introduces a mandatory boater education program for all motorized vessel operators. Please see the Massachusetts Environmental Police press release for more details.
Details regarding the boat safety certificate course are available at the Boat and Recreational Vehicle Safety Bureau.
